The Baku Research Institute publishes original scholarship on theoretical topics and issues related to Azerbaijan. We accept submissions in Azerbaijani or English across four publication categories: Research Articles, Opinion Pieces, Responses, and Translations. Before submitting, please review our guidelines below.
- SUBMISSION CATEGORIES
Research Articles
Length: 4,000 words maximum (including references)
Research Articles should present original analysis, with a clear scholarly structure:
a) Introduction: Concisely state your research question, significance, methodology, and key argument. Situate your work within existing literature and identify your contribution. (~10% of total length)
b) Main Body: Develop your argument with appropriate section headings. Present evidence, analysis, and address potential counterarguments.
c) Conclusion: Summarize your findings and their implications without introducing new material. You may suggest directions for future research. (~10% of total length or less)
Opinion Pieces
Length: 2,000-3,000 words (including references)
Opinion Pieces address timely issues of public importance. They should:
a) Clearly articulate the topic and its significance
b) Present a distinctive viewpoint or policy recommendation
c) Engage with existing debates and perspectives
d) Support arguments with relevant evidence
e) Provide actionable conclusions
Responses
Length: 1,000-1,500 words (including references)
Responses directly engage with previously published BRI content. They should:
a) Clearly identify the article being addressed
b) Focus specifically on arguments presented in the original piece
c) Provide substantive critique supported by evidence
d) Maintain a professional, scholarly tone
Translations
Length: No specific limit
For proposed translations, please:
a) Contact us first with information about the text you wish to translate
b) Explain its scholarly significance and relevance to our audience
c) Obtain any necessary copyright permissions before submission
- FORMATTING AND STYLE
Citations: Authors may use either:
a) Chicago Author-Date style (in-text citations)
b) Chicago Notes and Bibliography style (footnotes)

Word Limits: Articles exceeding the prescribed word limit may be considered for publication under exceptional circumstances, contingent upon editorial discretion and the scholarly significance of the contribution.

Complete Manuscripts: Email your finished manuscript to briadmin@bakuresearchinstitute.org
Proposals: For article proposals, submit a one-page abstract outlining your:
a) Topic and research question
b) Key argument or thesis
c) Theoretical framework or methodology
d) Significance and contribution to existing literature
- REVIEW PROCESS
Our editorial review typically takes up to one month. After review, submissions will be: - Accepted without revision: Ready for publication as submitted
- Accepted with minor revisions: Requires limited changes before publication
- Accepted with substantial revisions: Requires significant revisions before reconsideration
- Declined: Not suitable for publication in our platform
Authors of accepted manuscripts will receive detailed feedback from our editors. Authors of declined submissions will receive notification without detailed feedback.
